Buffalo String Works is an organization that provides group lessons on string instruments primarily to students from immigrant and refugee communities. The mission of Buffalo String Works is to “foster vibrant, inclusive communities through the transformative power of music.” The case reveals a strategic plan that focuses organizational priorities in the short and medium term. Among the priorities is the idea of onboarding, encouraging the teaching sta to embrace the spirit of inclusivity at Buffalo String Works. An experience with students from Somalia prompts the executive director of Buffalo String Works to schedule workshops with a local professor of social work, who focuses the teachers on the concept of cultural humility. The case concludes with the executive director considering next steps for the organization in the wake of the cultural humility training.

Founded in 1978, Chanticleer is a GRAMMY® Award-winning all-male vocal ensemble based in San Francisco. Educating young singers has always been an important part of the group’s mission. In its early history, the group would provide master classes and workshops by request before a more dedicated education program emerged under the leadership of a new president and general director in 1999. Soon a dedicated director of education was established, charged with organizing an annual youth choral festival for select Bay Area high school choirs. A nationwide choral festival followed, which spawned a select group of local high school singers that became known as the LAB Choir and met regularly. Further education initiatives materialized under the director of education. To measure the effectiveness of these education efforts, surveys were completed by student-singers over four years, the results of which are revealed in the case.

The Phoenix Symphony, Arizona’s only full-time professional orchestra, places a high priority on enhancing the quality of civic life and engaging with communities through music outside the concert hall. The organization has had success with an education initiative that has shown positive results. Other grant-funded programs have focused on wellness and have brought live music to hospitals, homeless shelters, and specialized healthcare facilities. The case focuses in particular on the symphony’s e orts to improve the lives of those su ering from Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. The Phoenix Symphony developed a consortium of research and health care partners. The group launched a pilot study intended to lower stress of patients and their caregivers through interventions of live music. Encouraging results have led to subsequent phases of the study. The symphony’s management considers a host of questions concerning how the Alzheimer’s program might expand.

Riding the success of the rediscovered work, he established an annual Beethoven Festival in Chicago, which o ered not only outstanding classical music performances but also dance, poetry, film, and visual art in a casual atmosphere. Positive reviews from the rst two festivals paved the way for an ambitious undertaking for the 2013 Beethoven Festival. Despite the artistic success, overall income fell short as many donor pledges failed to materialize. A public outcry in defense of the unpaid musicians sullied the reputation of the festival. The case culminates in the wake of the negative press.
