In 2007, violinist Kate Hatmaker and flutist Demarre McGill founded Art of Élan, a presenter of chamber music concerts for the San Diego metropolitan area. The group offers art music performances of a wide variety in venues outside of the traditional concert hall. Since the inception of Art of Élan, Hatmaker has sought the right balance of personnel across the organization. In 2017, she was introduced to the idea of succession planning through a coaching program for local leaders guided by current or former CEOs of not-for-profits. Her eyes were opened to understanding the roles people played in her organization, as well as to considering long-term plans for Art of Élan. The case reveals the draft of a strategic plan, which includes attention to future staffing and financial goals for the organization. With the loss of Art of Élan’s director of community engagement, Hatmaker took up this role, in addition to her position as executive director and artistic director. At the same time, she is interested to see if or how Art of Élan could survive without her full attention to these areas.

Artis—Naples is an interdisciplinary arts center in Southwest Florida, home to the Naples Philharmonic and The Baker Museum, which features modern and contemporary works of art. The institution was known as the Philharmonic Center for the Arts (or “The Phil”) until 2013, when the name was changed to Artis—Naples after an extensive brand audit. This case reviews the conditions that led to the rebranding; the audit and selection process for the new name; promotional activity around Artis—Naples; and an unexpected wave of public dissent, including objections by the founder and former CEO. The reader is asked to develop a response to patrons of the arts center in light of the criticism.

Growing attendance for MostArts is a major priority for the festival’s founder and director, Lisa Lantz. The case challenges the reader to develop a marketing plan for Lantz in order to build the festival audience.

Situated in an increasingly competitive environment for the arts, Astral is currently working to develop new audiences while training artists to succeed in today’s market. In 2017, the organization launched a new series that pairs live music with specially curated dining experiences. The staff is now looking for additional ways to diversify its programming and reach new demographics, all while giving artists valuable performing and learning opportunities. This case asks readers to brainstorm nontraditional events that Astral could design for its artists. Through this process, students must consider marketing strategies and logistics as they craft programs to engage new audiences.
