The reader is asked to devise a set of recommendations for hiring new staff members, considering the challenges associated with employing artists and non-artists in administrative positions.

It offers a broad portfolio of programs that address the current imbalances seen in musical arts organizations around the United States. On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the Sphinx, leadership had been tasked with placing special emphasis on SphinxConnect, an annual gathering of music industry leaders and musicians of color who network and discuss issues of diversity in the arts. The reader is asked to evaluate the success of the inaugural SphinxConnect convention and recommend improvements for the next annual meeting based on broad goals set by the Sphinx for growing and sustaining minority representation in the musical arts.

Founded in 1970, South Shore Conservatory is the largest community music school in New England and one of the fifteen largest organizations of its kind in the nation. With two campuses located south of Boston, Massachusetts, the conservatory serves over 4,000 students annually and is supported by a budget of nearly $5 million. One of South Shore Conservatory’s key access programs, ImagineARTS, is an early intervention, literacy-based arts program, has grown exponentially since its launch in 2012, but now faces the question of how to wield its unstable budget toward sustaining and funding future growth. After reviewing a short history of the organization and an overview of the ImagineARTS program, readers will evaluate two funding scenarios that are being considered by the SSC leadership team to ensure the long-term prosperity and future growth of the program.

The case concludes by asking the reader to create an expansion plan that details the actions needed to establish a new university chapter of Musical Mentors and to examine the implications of its commitment to instructor autonomy.
