Conversations about Dharma Swara’s identity, its level of professionalization, and its future cut across different aspects of the organization. The issue of attire serves as a proxy for larger questions at stake with the group.

A free music academy based in Rochester, New York, ROCmusic is similar to these programs in vision, but has an uncommon structure, which presents both benefits and drawbacks. Rather than functioning as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, ROCmusic is governed by a partnership among the major cultural organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies in the city of Rochester, known as the ROCmusic Collaborative. This case study intends to explore the ways this alliance accomplishes its mission. One challenge that ROCmusic faces is the lack of a written document that specifies the expectations for each member organization. As this case explores the inner-workings of the ROCmusic Collaborative, the reader is tasked with imagining how a Memorandum of Understanding among the partners could be revised to deliver outcomes for students and the community.

In 2007, violinist Kate Hatmaker and flutist Demarre McGill founded Art of Élan, a presenter of chamber music concerts for the San Diego metropolitan area. The group offers art music performances of a wide variety in venues outside of the traditional concert hall. Since the inception of Art of Élan, Hatmaker has sought the right balance of personnel across the organization. In 2017, she was introduced to the idea of succession planning through a coaching program for local leaders guided by current or former CEOs of not-for-profits. Her eyes were opened to understanding the roles people played in her organization, as well as to considering long-term plans for Art of Élan. The case reveals the draft of a strategic plan, which includes attention to future staffing and financial goals for the organization. With the loss of Art of Élan’s director of community engagement, Hatmaker took up this role, in addition to her position as executive director and artistic director. At the same time, she is interested to see if or how Art of Élan could survive without her full attention to these areas.

Established in 2005, soundSCAPE is an annual contemporary art music festival, which has been hosted at various locations in Italy. With over fifty composers and performers enrolled each summer, soundSCAPE provides a special experience for amateurs and young professionals that emphasizes collaboration and the artistic process. Launched single-handedly by pianist Nathanael May, the festival has grown substantially and has undergone changes to its organizational structure. This case examines some of the major institutional
hurdles for the soundSCAPE festival, including its relocations, incorporation, and changes in leadership. The values of collaboration and inclusivity are identified as key competitive advantages for soundSCAPE.
The case concludes by asking the reader to create diversity initiatives for the festival in light of these competitive advantages.
