This case explores the relatively opaque industry phenomenon of secondary composing. Historical and contemporary examples of the practice are presented, as well as the rationale for composers to accept this work. Various forms of credit and compensation are further explored. The case concludes with a scenario involving an unseasoned secondary composer’s contract and responsibilities writing music for a primetime television show.

Serving music educators and students statewide, the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) achieved a meaningful legislative victory with the passage and implementation of Senate Bill 815 in 2003, which mandated standards-driven music education in all districts. This case describes the journey to pass this legislation, as well as lessons learned through lobbying for arts education. The study highlights the continuing role of TMEA as an advocate for arts education, exploring the possibility of future legislation to further secure a strong position for quality arts curriculum in Texas schools.

The Hartford Symphony Orchestra represents one of the largest orchestras in New England, but also operates in a medium-sized market that has put pressure on its viability. This case centers on a contract dispute between the orchestra’s management and the unionized players, in particular the “core” of the orchestra, which is contracted for dozens of services each year.
