Now in year three of our National Science Foundation grant on the Future of Work,

Future Leaders of Music Technology Camp

Over the summer of 2025, IML hosted the first Future Leaders of Music Technology camp for high school students. This free, weeklong event was offered through the National Science Foundation grant and provided hands-on experience with music technology fundamentals and AI tools. The next rendition of the camp will be hosted in July 2025. Follow our social media for updates!

Eastman Leadership Development Retreat

This fall, the IML hosted the second annual Eastman Leadership Development retreat for local high school music leaders. Representatives from 9 different schools came to Eastman to learn about leadership and community engagement. Attendees worked keynote speaker Herb Smith, Eastman faculty, staff, and collegiate quartet on topics of identifying target audiences, musical entryways, project management, and concluded the day with a case study leadership session.

Eastman Leadership Bootcamp: for Advancing Leaders
Due March 1
From June 23-27, musicians will receive an intensive series of interactive workshops and case studies, to gain a unique set of skills, techniques, and knowledge that will enhance your career and grow as a leader.

Eastman Leadership Conference: for Deans, Department Chairs, and Faculty | Early Bird Registration by March 1
From June 3-6, this in-person conference enhances leadership effectiveness and the development of new perspectives, skills, and tools to successfully lead and manage a school, department, faculty, and students in today’s modern music school landscape.

Eastman Leadership Academy: for Emerging Professionals

Due March 31
Between June 9-13, 2025 rising juniors, seniors, and graduate students receive a deep dive into leadership and entrepreneurship through immersive, interactive, and participatory workshops and learning activities. Thanks to a generous sponsorship from Yamaha, admitted students will receive a full-tuition scholarship.

Careers in Crescendo: Lessons for Musicians Podcast

The IML podcast explores the journeys and projects of Eastman alumni, IML grant winners, and other music professionals. In our recent episode, we interview Alexander Davis, founder and Artistic Director of Sugar Hill Salon, and Brianna Garcon ’23E, the Director of Development, about their organization and a series of concerts in Jackie Robinson Park funded in part by a Paul R. Judy Center for Innovation and Research Grant. Sugar Hill Salon is one of the first chamber music series and artistic collectives that centers on black and brown woodwind artistry in classical music. Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and SoundCloud.

Individual Funding Database

This online database is a growing collection of music-specific funding streams that focus on supporting an individual, project, or small organization without requiring non-profit status! Funding types vary from education to professional development, internships to performances, travel to research, and more. The database is updated every few months with new resources. Recent News

Eastman Leadership Summer Programs

In June, the IML held the annual Academy, Bootcamp, and Conference. There were 20 collegiate students who attended the Academy, engaging in activity-based workshops to learn about nonprofit management. The Bootcamp cohort featured 19 advancing leaders, engaging in workshops on finance, fundraising, law, equity and inclusion, and leadership. Finally, 18 faculty and administrators from across the US attended the Conference, learning together about leadership and the challenges that face higher education today. Read more.

Future Leaders of Music Technology Camp

In July, IML hosted a five-day music and technology fundamentals camp for local high school musicians. Students received hands on experience in digital audio workstations (DAWs), MIDI sequencing, audio recording techniques, and AI. The program was part of the National Science Foundation Grant awarded to the University of Rochester and Northwestern University focusing on understanding the ecosystem of artificial-intelligence-powered music production.

New and Updated Publications

We have some new industry-based reports and resources that have been published this past year. Special thanks to the Paul R. Judy Center for Innovation and Research for supporting these initiatives.

Individual Funding Database – For early career musicians, experiential learning opportunities can be essential to gaining skills, knowledge, and connections in the field. However, financial cost can sometimes be a barrier. This online database is a growing collection of music-specific funding streams that focus on supporting an individual, project, or small organization without requiring non-profit status.
Instrument Job Openings in Professional Ensembles 2022–2023 – This cumulative report summarizes instrumental job openings at large performing ensembles in 2022 and 2023. Updated biennially, this report aims to offer recent employment trends of traditional classical performance ensembles by assessing recent position openings. This report shares information from two lenses: 1) an overview of the broader field and 2) information for each specific instrument.

In addition, we have recently released our 2023–2024 Annual Report. This report offers a glimpse into the curricular growth, professional development programs, and research we have supported this past year. One of our proudest achievements is increasing student engagement from 38% last academic year to 65% this year!

Paul R. Judy Center Grant Application – Due October 1

Any US-based musician or musical arts organization can be awarded up to $10,000 to support a project or research that engages systemic and transformational change in pursuit of a more just and equitable arts ecosystem. Congratulations to the winners of the Spring 2024 PRJC grant – cellist Hilary Glen and wind quintet District5.

Eastman Leadership Development Retreat (ELDr)– Register by September 27

A one-day retreat for high school music leaders, this interactive event supports students as they learn to engage their community through music. Taught by Eastman School of Music faculty and staff, each session focuses on a different topic necessary for interactive public performances, including program development, project management, and leadership.

Master of Arts in Music Leadership Application– applications reviewed year-round

The online Master of Arts in Music Leadership degree program is designed for musicians who seek to lead traditional or non-traditional musical arts organizations. The backbone of this degree is a combination of intense online coursework, relationship-building with classmates and faculty members, and hands-on experiences with leading musical arts organizations. Applications for admission are reviewed throughout the year, with matriculate dates offered in the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Recent News

Billboard Recognizes Eastman Programs as Top in the Nation

The Master of Arts in Music Leadership was one of four Eastman programs that were recognized as being top in the nation for supporting musicians in careers in an “increasingly complex music industry.”

Creative Collision Challenge

This fall, the IML collaborated with the University’s Ain Center in a business proposal competition, where teams of undergraduate and graduate University of Rochester students collaborated to design creative solutions. Along with the UR’s NSF grant team (where IML is a co-PI), the IML team challenged students to use Generative AI to solve problems within content creation. Members from the IML team served as judges and mentors throughout the day. Five teams participated in the all-day experience, with cash prizes being award for first and second place.

Context Conference 2023: Contextualizing Equity and Inclusion in Music

The IML and the Paul R. Judy Center for Innovation and Research were proud sponsors of the inaugural Context Conference, produced by Eastman’s Dr. Crystal Sellers Battle, Director of the George Walker Center for Equity and Inclusion in Music and Associate Dean of Equity and Inclusion. Additionally, the IML received an Impact Grant from the music fraternity Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI) to support a panel on “Women in Leadership: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.”

IML Historical Reports and Outcomes

Since the 2022 Meliora Weekend festivities that celebrated multiple IML milestones, we’ve continued to research and document the major developments and evolution of IML. After months of gathering 25 years of programs, partners, grant-winners, faculty members, and certificate and degree-earners, we’re pleased to share two newly published documents:

A 25-Year Retrospective – To celebrate 25 years of remarkable achievements, we are pleased to present this retrospective report. It documents the visionary journey of IML, which has played a pivotal role in shaping the educational landscape in music by embracing the entrepreneurial spirit that underlies musical excellence.

2022-2023 Annual Report – This report offers a glimpse into the curricular growth, student engagement, professional development programs, and research we have supported beyond the conclusion of the 25-Year Retrospective. We plan to release these reports annually, so be sure to check in over the summer for updates on our 2023-2024 outcomes!

Music, Law, and AI Symposium: February 21 & 28
The IML is hosting a two-part Music, Law, and AI online symposium. The first, held on Wednesday, February 21 from 12:00-2:00PM EST, will focus on exploring generative AI for Music. The second, held on Wednesday, February 28 from 3:00-5:00PM EST, will focus on exploring legal and ethical considerations between music and AI. Both sessions are free, though registration is required. Learn more and register here.

Want to mentor a musician? Alumni can take part in the University Mentorship Program, where they are paired with a current Eastman student or young alum. Over the course of three months, you can support these young professionals as they navigate careers, projects, and more.
